Specialty Service - Milling Head Rebuilds

We talked to our Service Manager, Rick McGuire, about our milling head rebuilds for more information about why this service is unique and in demand. We repair and rebuild many types of machines, but milling head rebuilds have become a specialty that we want more perspective clients to know about.

How has this become one of our most in-demand specializations?

At this point, we are tapping into 40 years of experience and have done many milling heads over the years, 25-40 per year on average. We don't just do Bridgeport mills, but we do so frequently because of their saturation of the market and the accessibility of parts. Their effective design continues to have value and longevity after a repair. It can easily be a better investment than a new mill.

What can customers expect?

There are no surprises in our work, particularly with Milling Head rebuilds and repair. We quote you before the work begins and rarely do we encounter work that will push the quote up. The best part of Bridgeport or other mill rebuilds is truly the access to available parts. It really opens up the options for you to repair or rebuild. When we diagnose your milling head, it is very possible that we can just replace a part for a repair, which keeps your costs down from that of a refurbishment. But even a total refurbishment has immense protentional of cost savings in the long term.

Who, what, when, and why would you recommend doing this service with us?

Money and value, which everyone in manufacturing is concerned with, of course.

What is the difference between a repair and refurbishment?

A repair is when we only have to replace a few parts of the mill head. This is the most cost-effective option and quickest, however some mill heads need much more work and a refurbishment, essentially a total overhaul, is either recommended or required to make it operational.

Can you elaborate on what a ‘Rebuilt Head Swap’ is and why a customer might want this option?

If we have a milling head available, we are able to swap out ours for yours, for a lower cost and quicker timeline than a milling head refurbishment. We would bring you the new (rebuilt) head and take ownership of the one you currently have. This isn't always available, so when you call, ask us about repair, refurbishment and a swap and we will help you determine your options based on our resources for each and what we find in your diagnosis
