When you’ve been in business for nearly 50 years, your story isn’t just about tools, repairs, and invoices—it’s a story of people, of perseverance, and of passing the torch.
Humble Beginnings
Dan’s Machine Tool began in the humblest of ways: a man, a shed, and a knack for repairs.
That man was Dan Vitullo—a skilled machinery repair technician with a natural talent for fixing what others couldn’t. What he didn’t know, he learned. And what he touched, he improved. Dan’s early years in the business were focused solely on machinery repair, working with a modest team and growing a reputation, one job at a time.
Dan’s girlfriend, Jennifer Kushner, joined him in the business and quickly became a full-time partner. From accounting and payroll to advertising and customer relationships, she ran the office, even when “office” meant using an electric typewriter and mailing hand-addressed letters to machine shops pulled from a phone book.
Growing a Reputation
In 2005, the business became a corporation—though it was never run as a faceless one. Instead, Dan’s Machine Tool remained deeply personal. Dan and Jennifer built a company based on Dan’s reputation as “the king of the Bridgeports”—a reputation that grew throughout southern California and beyond. The team wasn’t huge—10 to 12 people at its peak—but they were experts, and clients stayed with them for decades. Big names in the space and auto industry turned to Dan’s Machine Tool, not because of flashy showrooms, but because when their manual machines broke down, they knew exactly who to call.
Continuing After Loss
When Dan Vitullo passed away 14 years ago, Jennifer kept the business alive—without fanfare or complaint. “I didn’t really have to overcome anything,” she said. “Everyone knew their jobs. We just continued on.” Through economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic, Dan’s Machine Tool remained steady, reliable, and deeply respected.
Of course, the path wasn’t without setbacks. A trusted employee left unexpectedly to start his own business, leading to a difficult legal battle that Jennifer eventually won. And like many women in a male-dominated industry, she faced her share of bias. But Jennifer never let that stop her. “I was tough, and I didn’t put up with it. I always knew I could do it on my own—and I did.”
A Time for Transition
Eventually, the pressures of California’s rising costs, combined with her own health challenges and the passing of time, made Jennifer realize it was time to hand off the legacy. She was 80. She’d done her part. But this wasn’t just about closing shop—it was about finding the right person to carry it forward.
That person was Dan Wheeler.
A Trusted Connection
Dan (Vitullo) and Jennifer had known Dan Wheeler and his family for decades, going all the way back to their time in the Pacific Coast Machinery Dealers network. In fact, years ago, when Dan and his wife Gina were just starting out and had no money for a honeymoon, she gifted them a trip to Maui she had won in a raffle.
“We wouldn’t have had a honeymoon if it weren’t for you,” Gina told her later. That deep sense of mutual respect and trust has continued through the years.
When Jennifer approached Dan Wheeler about liquidating the business, he saw something more: an opportunity to continue a legacy, one with a known name—a respected business with deep roots and loyal clients. Rather than sell off the machines, Dan offered to buy the whole thing.
A New Chapter Begins
Dan’s Machine Tool is now entering a new chapter—with new energy, modern advertising, and fresh vision. But what hasn’t changed is the heart of the business. The commitment to precision. The relationships with customers who rely on manual machines to keep their business running. The reputation of Dan Vitullo, whose skill and dedication built more than just machines. He and Jennifer built a legacy that will last for many years to come.
“It makes me feel so secure to know that the name will go on,” she said. “There’s always a need for what we do. And now Dan Wheeler can take it even further than I could.”
The Legacy Lives On
